VA Work Study Program

Need extra money while you are using a VA education benefits and you need an employer who is understanding of your schedule? Then this program is for you, as it lets you get set up with a part-time job!

Program Requirements

You must meet ALL of the following:

  • Be enrolled at least 3/4 time in a college/university, professional program, or vocational school; and

  • Have enough VA education benefit eligibility to finish the work study contract; and

  • You’re using an approved VA education program to pay for your education or training.

Applying

  1. Complete VA Form 22-8691

  2. Submit the completed application to the Regional Office that handles your education benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much am I gonna get paid?
  • You will get paid minimum wage for your state; UNLESS you are working for your school and their pay is higher - in which case you’d get that higher rate.

What kinds of organizations are partnered in this program?
  • Examples include:

    • All 3 VA administrations (Benefits, Health, and National Cemetery);

    • Educational facilities (Colleges, universities, places that do not offer degrees);

    • State Veteran programs; and

    • Veteran Service Organizations.

When can I work?
  • You can while you are using your VA education benefits AND DURING breaks between semesters/courses.

Is there a limit to how much I can work?
  • You can work no more than 25 times the number of weeks of the length of your semester/program.

    • So if your semester program ran for 10 weeks then you could work no more than 250 hours during that semester/program.
