Space Available Travel (Space A Flights)

Space Available Travel (Space A Flights)

Space Available (Space A) travel allows eligible veterans to fly on military aircraft when seats are available. It's essentially FREE air travel, but comes with significant caveats.

Important: As a veteran, you are dead-last on the priority list. Be prepared to wait and have FLEXIBLE travel plans! DoD is NOT obligated to continue your travel or return you to your origin point.

Who Is Eligible?

Space A eligibility is limited. For veterans, the primary eligible groups are:

  • Retired Military: Can fly worldwide (CONUS and OCONUS)
  • 100% P&T Veterans: Can fly within the US and its territories ONLY

Important Notes:

  • Dependents MUST be accompanied by their sponsor
  • P&T Veterans and their dependents can ONLY fly within the US and its territories

How to Fly Space A

Due to DoD giving locations freedom in how they run Space A terminals, there is not one easy method for getting aboard. It is CRITICAL that you contact your location ahead of time to learn their specific processes and procedures!

Required Documents

  • DoD ID Card: All travelers MUST have a DoD ID
  • Valid Passport: Required for travel to foreign countries
  • Visa: May be needed depending on destination and length of stay

Exception: Veterans living in American Samoa who need to travel to Hawaii for VA medical care must have a letter from the VA indicating they live in American Samoa and must travel to Hawaii for hospital care, along with the dates care will be provided.

Helpful Tips

  1. Check Terminal Facebook Pages: Many base terminals post upcoming flights and helpful information on their Facebook pages
  2. Have Emergency Money: Flights get diverted, planes break down, and sometimes you CANNOT get a flight home. Have enough money to pay for commercial transportation, lodging, and other expenses
  3. Use a Close Terminal: Checking in every day is a pain if it's longer than a 15-minute drive, especially carrying bags back and forth
  4. Be Flexible: Your travel plans MUST be flexible - you may get bumped repeatedly
